There is a story about the famous Japanese netsuke carver Mitsuhiro. (His work happens to be characterized by the beauty of his signature.) He was asked:

"If you allow your students to add your signature to their pieces, how will people be able to identify which ones you carved?"

His reply: "Naturally, they will assume the best ones were mine."
