I would like some help with these beads, they were threaded on one continuous chord knotted between each bead. They appear to be some kind of clay or crude ceramic. I smashed one of the already damaged ones to see what the insides were like ( see photo) I had a wee taste too ( not pleasant)

Does anyone have any idea about the material and when and where they might have been made.
