This weekend I am leaving for the annual conference of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers, the Gathering, in New Orleans.

I will be giving a presentation on the traditions of glass beadmaking in Europe. A very broad subject it seems, but I will focus on Lauscha and Jablonec and how their techniques are relevant today for modern beadmaking.

Will also hopefully be able to have a look at some of the older Mardi Gras beads, which were mostly Czech and Japanese. I promise to do a trip report when I am back, and have recovered from the sticky hot Louisiana weather and the jetlag that comes from a shorter trip.

Also thought I'd let you know that I have made a decision, which partly comes from preparing for this presentation, on what my next book and research will be about.

It will be about 'Beads from the torch'. It will focus on different periods and styles of making beads at the torch. From German lampworking on fish oil lamps to modern beadmaking techniques today. I'm hoping to make a head start at the Gathering with some interviews.

If you have any recommended literature on this subject, I would appreciate it. This will probably be a larger format book that the previous ones, so I have got quite some work ahead of me.

The picture shows me, on a pile of beads, in New Orleans in 2015, after the Mardi Gras parades.
