I will attempt to add some photos of the 7 sided cut blue beads in question. There are two types: Type 1.) Compound 7 sided drawn with clear core, outer cobalt blue-purple color and clear core, and also a lighter color blue with clear core as well Type 2.) 7 sided drawn with No Core- same color throughout, all dark cobalt blue- purple color. The sizes are varied in not only the width, but also the length of the cut. ___________ Type 1: smallest width Cobalt clear core is 8mm wide X 13mm long. Largest 12mm wide X 13.58mm long. Many width variations! Lighter blue with clear core is 9.89mm wide X 12.78mm long. Note you cannot see the clear core until held up to the light!
Type 2: smallest cobalt solid/No Core is 8mm width X 11.46mm length, the extra long appearing bead in group is 8.59mm wide X 22.76mm long. A medium sized bead is 9.88mm wide X 12.50mm long. A wide larger thin walled bead is 11.65mm wide X 15.35mm long.
Edit: Adding this odd bead -that shows an inner edge on one side. This bead is not ground/faceted. This is one of the 7 sided clear core beads.
I understand from reading that the Mexican made cut blue beads were bought as 7 sided drawn German glass tubes (age of cane tubes unknown), then in the 1980's ground/faceted while still a tube, then separated into beads. I am not certain I am seeing the cupping of the ground facets (maybe you can though?) which is obvious in some of the other Mexican examples, but the grind is unusual and rough, as are the end cuts...appearing to need an extra step of finishing? What I am thinking is that these are related to the 7 sided German made drawn glass tubes which were bought in the 1980's and that were then cut in Guadalajara, Mexico. Picard notes that Henry Merle was the person associated with making these beads at a Guadalajara Glass House. Edit: It would be interesting to find out from John Picard if Henry Merle gave a date range on the German glass canes that were purchased and used for the Mexican cut blue beads. I am open to all input! Please post any photos of cobalt (or any color) Mexican made cut beads similar to "Russian Trade Beads" you have collected, and especially a photo of the core as, if what I have are an example, it is not obvious on initial inspection that there is a clear core- they just look cobalt. Also, as noted, there are some solid color beads in the group I collected. Thanks! Examples are in the attachments that Jamey Allen provided from former BCN Posts. I think what I have are experimental sample cuts, some done poorly- some better looking than others. The glass is beautiful, but the ground facets are sloppy and rough on most examples.
