I read an exposition on "string sawing" (the use of corded fibers to abrade stones, exploiting a "sawing" maneuver) in about 1980. The present article may suggest a very early date for such work—but this should not be a surprise. This was primitive technology that was devised before there was anything like drills and rotary abraders. I suppose one has to look toward fabric manufacture (weaving, plaiting, netting, knitting)) to get a handle on corded fibers, to grasp the "origin of string." Nevertheless, MANY technologies were devised for bead and ornament manufacture, and were then exploited for other arts and artifices. So I would not discount the possibility. JDA.
