it would be a question for an anthropologist—not an archaeologist.
Reusing old damaged pieces to make something new has been happening for centuries. The difference, now, is that we can document what we began with, and explain what the artifacts have become. I've been doing this for most of my career as a bead designer. So, no, the problems you suggest need not happen.
