Original Message: Buddha or Guan-yin? |
---|
I started getting interested in Czech Egyptian Revival beads & necklaces, and it looks like in the same time period the Czech were also doing some chinoiserie items. I don't know exactly what they were depicting here - so I'm wondering if anyone has better familiarity with this particular genre. In checking out various similar images on pendants, I have narrowed it down to Buddha himself or Guan-yin, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. I have no idea about the smaller heads. The flies are really cool too and to me, they are more of an Egyptian motif. Possibly the necklace was re-constituted from a variety of components. The stringing is poor, done on wire, and you can see that the bail on the pendant is equally poor - just a piece of green craft wire. So I doubt this was an original Czech necklace - those were usually knotted or strung with cord, not wire. I'm re-doing it with a better bail and a vintage Czech screw clasp.
