Here's a strand of beads that Russ Nobbs acquired a few years ago, that he kindly allowed me to shoot. You can see that the beads are about half plain and half patterned. The patterned parts are over the conventional fossil-palm-wood areas; whereas the plain areas wouldn't take the treatments, and remain translucent and (usually) white—plain common opal. Thanks Russ!
