Original Message:   Crazing is mostly surface treatment.
The crazing is a surface treatment and does not usually penetrate very far into the stone. When it does penetrate very far it tends to distress the stone, making it more likely to break. It's similar process (we think) to the surface treatment that makes the s called "crab fire agate" with the scaly carnelian/milky white patches.
