Wayne they are carved chinese canarium nuts, look end-on and you may still see the shell has 3 lobes- yours appear to have had the pointy ends filed away to be more round ended... the prayer strand may not be terribly old... this is the image from my book, page 51, (annoyingly printed too small in the book...) they are sometimes called chinese olives.
