Original Message: Re: The yellow beads are Japanese |

Wayne, I am pleased to hear about evidence pointing toward Japan regarding the origin of these yellow, blue and black examples. Often they are sold as "Ojime" because of the classic ojime size -3/4" or 18mm diameter, and large perforation. More often, I have found them on the corner tassels of embroidered black silk folding card table covers. I always thought they are from the 20's or 30's because of the quality of the silk cloth and tassel. While we now have evidence that the beads are probably Japanese, I feel the covers appear to be Chinese because of the stylization of dragon and phoenix designs and quality of the tassel. When I have discussed this Chinese/Japanese duality with Jamey Allen, he has suggested that the beads may have been made in Japan as an export to China. Or possibly commissioned under Japanese supervision. Fred All rights reserved by Bead Collector Network and its users |
