Original Message: SCHARRER & KOCH beads in Africa |
---|
Not only Scharrer & Koch - with their branch offices in Venice and Gablonz, leave alone their close ties to Nuremberg - also other German bead wholesellers delivered their vitreous goods to the Bavarian Toy-City (Nuremberg). That opens the door to speculate how Fichtelmountain Beads might have ended up in Africa. Most likely already in the later 18th century, through simelar channels. Trading-houses in Nuremberg had close relations to the slave traders of Liverpool - known to be a main re-exporter of (Venetian) glassbeads to the Westafrican coast. Through same or simelar channels the beads of Gablonz and Bavaria could have reached Africa. All rights reserved by Bead Collector Network and its users |
